reusable gift wrap {sew mama sew giveaway day}

GiveawayDay

I always look forward to Sew Mama Sew's Giveaway Day that rolls around twice a year.  It's such a great way to visit some crafty blogs as well as enter to win tons of handmade goodies.  This year I'm so excited to give away something that I'm instituting into Christmas this year.  I mentioned on Friday that I'm going totally reusable on the gift wrap this year.  It makes me so happy to look under my tree and see packages wrapped in fabric!

reusable gift wrap

I decided to make a few to give away, too!  I have four different pieces.  See the photos for an idea of the different sized packages this gift wrap will hold (packages not included)...a "tootsie roll" that's great for clothes, a gift card holder, a bag that's great for books or small toys, and a rectangle piece that's great for those bigger gifts.

I'm not using reusable gift wrap, but it's got me thinking about it for sure! There's no reason I couldn't do it. My sewing skills aren't great, but you don't need fancy skills for a bag!

I used to think it was "cheating" to use bags but now I just think I'm practical. The bags are getting so beautiful that it's easy to justify.

I really need to get into using re-usable wrap at christmas time! for baby gifts, I always use an inexpensive flannel receiving blanket to wrap, and since I have all girls, a little purse or tote makes a great replacement gift bag for all of those little birthday parties

I love the *idea* of reusable gift wrap, but I've never gotten DH to agree to it. He thinks ripping the paper is half the fun for the kids. We do recycle the wrapping paper, though and reuse paper gift bags whenever possible.

I had plans to use only reusable gift wrap this year, but I don't think it's going to happen (sadly). Maybe next year. But I would LOVE to see a picture of your tree!

I do use reusuable wrapping. We had boxes that had printed designs on them and used them for years but they are getting worn out. I hate to part with them. I also first wrapped gifts in fabric but tape didn't stick and finally made some bags with ribbon to keep them closed. This is great for those really big or bulky items. Your bags look so festive and thanks for the chance to win.

I decided last year not to use any wrapping paper at all, but my family kind of sucks so I think a bunch of my fabric bags got thrown away anyway. This year I realized I still have a bunch of paper from year;s past that needs to be used up before I start thinking about reusable so I am, but I did see a great tutorial on Craftster.org about "reusuable wrapping paper" where a lady just hemmed some fabric on all 4 sides with ribbon on 2 sides and used it like real wrapping paper and the ribbon worked for the tape and, well, ribbon. It was sweet! To wrap a DVD I think she used a FQ sized piece of fabric.

pwollen said...

I am not but I've seen something like this before and would like to try it next year. Very cool idea!

We've been using fabric to wrap gifts for a few years. One of my favourites is using vintage square silk scarves I picked up at a thrift store. With smaller gifts you don't even need a ribbon, just tie the four corners together and you have a wrapped gift and never have to worry about running out of tape at 4am!

Erika said...

That would be the first gift wrap I couldn't use to cover shoe boxes in - which is how I recycle all the wrapping
baby shoe boxes are great to store post cards, others have the perfect size to withstand the scrutiny of post officers when deciding weather they have the right measurements for international airmail - and they are so much nicer than the standard packaging ...
Anyway I would love that reusable wrapping.

There is one piece of wrapping paper that keeps being used to wrap the same box year after year..and whoever opens it just knows to be extra careful!

I'm so with you on fabric gift wrap! It used to make me uneasy to see all that wasted paper on x-mas morning and now with our little kid, it's magnified x 10.
I started by making 5 bags per person last year and it made gift wrapping so much easier, especially the weird shaped things like stocking stuffers. We do still wrap a few things though -- my dd is 5 so sanctioned ripping is most of the fun -- but we're hooked now and never want to go back to that huge pile of garbage. I feel so free!
