reusable gift wrap

12:33 AM

I like to recycle and re-purpose whenever I can.  If it's not useful for anything, then I toss it, but if it can be re-purposed, then I try to re-purpose it.  Last year, when I was browsing some of my favorite blogs (particularly Soule Mama), I noticed a concept I hadn't thought much of.  Reusable gift wrap!  I thought it was genius and wanted to do it.  The only problem was time (it was already too far into the season).  It was either drive myself mad sewing, or toss the idea and enjoy the season.  I chose the latter.

However, I didn't forget.  In fact, I tried to be strategic.  For birthdays during the year, I sewed reusable gift wrap and added touches of Christmas colors so it would work for the holidays.  It paid off.  From the little bit that I did sew last year and the wrapping that I made from birthdays, I found that there wasn't much sewing I needed to do in order to go totally reusable.

It makes my heart happy knowing I haven't used money on something that will be ripped and thrown in the trash.  I haven't had to buy supplies either.  I've had enough random scraps in my stash.  I love the different look of all the packaging together!

As I started wrapping gifts this year, I realized that I always write the recipient's name on a piece of paper.  Hmmm, that wouldn't do, so I sewed some gift tags.  I had never sewn words and thought it would be so hard.  It wasn't!  I added some no fray to the edges and now I have some reusable gift tags, too!  Totally love it.

Do you use reusable gift wrap?  Have you ever thought of using it?  Tune in Monday.  I'm giving away a whole sampling of reusable gift wrap!

  5. I love your reusable gift wrap! I have to say that I haven't used reusable gift wrap but I sell them at craft shows and they sell really well. In fact, I've sold them all! I guess I should start using them myself also.

    I love your gift tags also! I never thought of that. If I get a little time before Christmas I should make some for myself.

Thanks for sharing, you've given me an idea for wrapping my pressents, thought I've gone out and purchased wrapping paper (the first tine in years- I usually re-use paper from the previous year) I will start by using tea towels and ribbons for some.

    We sometimes wrap gifts in pillowcases for birthdays. I haven't made reusable wrapping, but maybe I'll get strategic with birthdays in 2012 =)

  12. What a wonderful idea! I was just thinking about how wasteful paper wrapping is when I found your blog through Lindsey @ The Little Missionary Girl. I'll definitely be incorporating this idea :-)

I hung my fall leaves up this fall...from long ago giveaway(or maybe I bought these from, I can't remember!). 15. I re-purpose store bags sometimes, like Bath & Body Works bags, by gluing a gift card front (re-purposed!) over their name. I always love getting fabric type bags with my presents, though, because I can then use them for other things later on. Great idea for Christmas though. Haven't thought of that before! I just lament buying paper each year and the big pile of trash it creates at Christmas gatherings. Will try this soon!

  16. It is so, so pretty!! Love it. And those tags... those tags are perfect! We are pretty good about saving and reusing gift wrap. I painted some Christmas boxes like 10 years ago and we still see them making an appearance! lol

  19. Love your backs Jen! I've done fabric bags for a few years now...it began years ago when I bought loads of Christmas fabric after the season was over. I made a bunch of "pillowcases" with drawstrings in all sizes. A few years ago I made flannel bags and bought flannel pj's for everyone to wear that night. We all live far away and so when we do get together...everyone spends the night and we play games all night long ;}

  20. I love this idea and I have been trying to add some into our wrapping this year! I have seen the bag style before -- but I notice that some of your packages look very square just like they would if they were wrapped with paper. How do you do that!?? Enquiring minds! :-)
