two copper coins :: risk

With my 2012 "word" being risk, I am studying risk takers in the Bible.
It's fascinating to learn these nuggets from Bible greats.

widow's coins

As the rich put their large sums of money into the treasury, the widow came with her two copper coins. Jesus said she put in more than anyone else, because she gave out of her need and not out of her surplus. Her sacrifice, her risk, was great, but I bet her joy was even greater.
I love how God's kingdom is upside down compared to the rest of the world.
When it comes to money, I often find there's a battle going on between my hand being opened vs. being closed. The greatest sacrifice is always when you know you need to give but there's just not much to spare, but with the greatest sacrifice comes the greatest reward. There's no formula that says, "If I give money, I will be blessed with money in return."

2 copper coins

That's what is so beautiful with the widow who gave her copper coins. With a pure heart, she gave. Perhaps it was her last bit of dignity. Perhaps she was risking not having enough money to purchase her next meal. For her, it didn't matter. It was the joy of being obedient. It's not about the amount, it's about obedience.

Scripture reference: Mark 12:41-44, Luke 21:1-4

One of my favorite stories in the bible. It's not about what you have, it's about where your heart is.

Yes, the risk feels great these days... especially with the responsibility of children. I can appreciate the closed versus open hand struggle. Hope you have a wonderful Valentine's Day, Jen!

I'm sure it WAS a risk for her! And I'm sure she had no idea that her story would be written in the Bible for so many people to read & learn from!
