passport photos

Now I know the title doesn't imply something very exciting but this has been my week...gathering everything needed to renew the kid's passports once again. I believe this is the third one for both of them. So crazy!

So yes my "studio" has been very practical. I did do something new this time and took the kid's passport photos myself. A friend was very helpful in pointing me in the right direction. You can find passport photo requirements as well as a photographer's guide on the travel.gov website. After you've taken your very interesting looking passport photos, you can go either to EPassportPhoto.Com or use the Photo Tool on travel.gov to turn them into the right size you need. I opted with the Photo Tool because I liked how it made it easy to fit the head into the dimensions.

It all seems a bit complicated so we'll see if they accept these when we go this afternoon. I figure if I have to pay $20 for new passport photos, then I have to pay it, but if these fly, then I'll have saved $20! I'm hoping for the latter. Don't they look so happy? I told them they couldn't smile big, so this is what I got!

UPDATE: So we went to the passport office this afternoon, and they did not accept our photos. I took the opportunity to ask the nice lady what I should have done differently so they would accept them next time. It was the textured background that didn't fly. I had wondered about that. I asked her if next time I could use Photoshop to fill in the background with a solid white. She said that would be fine (just no editing on their faces). I guess I got points for trying because she didn't charge us to take their photos! Yea! Still saved $20! Oh, and for those who mentioned something in the comments about the ears showing, in the U.S. you do not have to have the ears showing. Just some FYI. :)

Linking up my oh, so fun practical "studio" time up with Jennifer @ Studio JRU for Sneak Peek Friday. I'm sure the rest of the creatives linking up are full of much more fun than passport photos. :)

Yep, I think your pictures should be fine. We have had passport pictures taken at Walgreens that don't look nearly that good! Oh, and I know all about getting kids' passports... again and again... both of my girls are on their 2nd passports, and Claire is only 4 years old!!!

I am so delighted about the ability to take my own passport photos. It's saving us a TON of money, is infinitely easier for babies, and I can actually use a picture of ME I like, rather than making do with whatever the drugstore clerk manages to capture. For TEN years!! Yes, all the capitals mean I feel passionately about this topic. LOL!!

Oh yes .. isn't that "biometric picture style lovely" ... from twhat I see at least they do not require "uncovered ears" at your end of the world.

Love it! They look like seasoned little travelers with those 'smiles'. They know what's up!!

I'm pinning this. We need to start thinking baby passport. I could write a post on the necessities of getting your pet ready to fly. (like anyone would care!). We brought our dog back from Africa for about $100. Oh life before kids...

btw- I don't know how you feel about pictures of your kids flying around on pinterest- so I pinned your banner.

haha they look like deer caught in headlights!

Your photos look way better than the ones we've sent in for passports (successfully), so hopefully you won't have any problems!

Great way to save money! They are great clear photos so they sure should accept them. Have a great weekend!

That was a great idea to do them yourself Jen! Who would have guessed it was the textured wall behind them that would cause a problem! That doesn't change the way they look. lol Glad you were still able to save the money! So fun to be getting ready for the big trip! :)

I've taken my husband and daughter's passport photos in the past, using our white fridge as the background and cropping until we had the right size. It's rather tricky isn't it. Very good that you weren't charged for their photos.

good for you for making the attempt to do this! I always just go along with the regulations thinking there is NO WAY they will accommodate.
