in the studio :: color palettes

12:00 AM

Welcome to In The Studio, a place to show off your studio and meet some great artists! My house is a crazy mess right now, but it's one of those "it has to get worse before it gets better" kind of situations. Progress resumed on my scullery this week (woot! woot!), and it has been a dusty mess. Cutting out concrete walls and tearing up tile is not a clean job.

I mentioned on Tuesday that we started another project. I am SO happy to report that the ceiling, walls, floor, and stairs are all painted! I'll let the floor dry really well before we move my boy up there. He's so excited to have his own room. My plan is to give it the weekend to cure. Unfortunately the rest of my list...baseboards and my slew of DIY projects will have to be put on hold. We had some thieves come in Wednesday night and steal every.single.power.tool out of our store room. It's so frustrating, but I can't let it get to me. It's the reality of living in S. Africa, and if I dwell on it, I start to get angry. It's not a good place to go to.

I'm getting a little off track here, because this post is about creativity, not my anger issues! :) I've been dreaming of color. Seriously. I have color palettes going through my head like crazy. I don't usually dream about color palettes, but it's been super fun to envision what I want each room to look like. For Joshua's room, we've painted the walls white and the floors black. We're going with navy curtains, a light gray duvet cover, and some lime green accents throughout the room. I can't wait for it to unfold.

We will be doing very little renovating in the kitchen. I've said I won't even start in the kitchen until my scullery is finished, but I'm starting to dream of colors. The floor and part of the countertop is already black, so I plan on leaving that. My dishes are chocolate brown, and there's no need to buy new dishes just to go with wall color. I'm really loving this color palette. I'm itching to paint, but we'll see. My Plascon color choices include Rickshaw Red (reminds me of India), Wild Pink (although I think it's more salmon than pink), Daiquiri Cream, White, Chocolate Dream (I tend to dream of chocolate...and paint colors), and Black. I plan on also incorporating these colors into the scullery although I'm not exactly sure on the details. They are 2 separate rooms, so it's easy to break it up a bit.

I'm working on my living room palettes. Right now my poor living room looks like a hoarder's paradise with stacks of things everywhere that either belong upstairs or in the scullery. Sigh. I'll get there.

Do you have any house projects going on right now? Do you find yourself drawn to certain colors because of their name? I know I do.

Now it's your turn! Remember your "studio" can be anywhere. Let's celebrate each other's creativity by linking up and visiting as many as the other studios as you can. Check out the about post for more info and don't forget to grab the In The Studio button!

  1. That is too bad about the power tools!

We're slowly working on the third bedroom so it can be the master bedroom and change the current master bedroom into the music room. :) Just painting and moving furniture, really. And I'm dreaming about my kitchen. I get excited about pictures I see and then realise that will NOT fit in my house. So we'll have our carpenter friend over soon to try to blend dreams with reality. I love living in a small space and figuring out how to make it work beautifully.

  3. Hi Jen!
Sorry to have been MIA most of the summer. It was a good thing to do only the essentials for a season. But...it's good to be back! ;)
I'm so sorry about your loss of tools. Hope that you can get everything replaced without out-of-pocket costs.
And....Happy Anniversary to you and your love. Best wishes for many, many more!!

  4. Sorry to hear of burglaries - but I think you seem to have the right attitude about it all. Not letting it get you down.

Good luck with your decorations and renovations.

  5. How frustrating to lose your power tools! We are moving into a condo we bought sight unseen at the end of this month. I am wanting to plan plan plan, but I can't because all I have to go off are a few iPhone pictures! I'm looking forward to making it our own once we get there, and I need to figure out how to fit four kids in one room! We had three in one room in Massachusetts, but adding Anna in will take some creativity!
